When was the first Thanksgiving?

In the year 1621 at Plimouth Plantation (what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts), in the autumn, the Pilgrims, who sailed to the New World on the Mayfolower, celebrated a day of thanksgiving.  This meant a day of prayer and fasting in thanksgiving for the Native Americans who imparted their knowledge of raising crops and trapping game.

Afterward, there were three days of feasting and celebration.  As the Plimoth colony prepared for the winter ahead, they feasted with the Native American King Massasoyt of the Wampanoag Tribe, together with some 90 of his men.

The King, in return, contributed several slain deer to the event which he presented to the Pilgrims' Governor William Bardford.  Wild fowl, venison, ducks, geese and turkeys were among the fare.

One colonist, Edward Winslow, wrote:  "Although it be not alwayes so plentifull, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodnesse of God, we are so farre from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plentie."
