In 1982 West Houston Assistance Ministries, Inc. (WHAM), formerly known as Westheimer Ecumenical Social Ministry, formed the first "door of hope" for needy children, families, and homeless individuals in West Houston.
v Our goal has always been to assist those during emergency situations, so that they can help themselves get through the rough times.
v WHAM is a human services organization that exists through a coalition of places of worship.
v Our service region includes residents in Zip Codes 77042, 77077, 77057, 77063 and 77082.
v WHAM meets the essentials of living, which include: food, clothing, household items, financial aid, transportation and job search assistance.
v Members of the WHAM Coalition provide financial support, volunteer services and donations of food and clothing.
v An important source of funds also is generated through the proceeds from sales in our Second Blessing Store, a store that offers new and gently used clothing, furniture, household goods, and other quality merchandise.
In 2008, contributions enabled the assistance of more than 7,800 clients needing food, work, financial assistance, and clothing. They also helped more than 3,300 homeless individuals, while feeding 13,100 of Houston's hungry.
